CHSAA golf tournament round-up: Fordham, Iona Prep advance to the final
By FiveBoroSports.com May 20, 2009St. Joseph by the Sea was standing between Fordham Prep and a fourth straight appearance in the CHSAA boys’ golf championship. But John Hough and Teddy Morrissey had extra incentive to defeat the Vikings in an economical fashion.
They had their Senior Prom to attend.
The two won their matches on the sixth hole and raced from Winged Foot in Mammaroneck to get ready for their big night, knowing their big match would come next week after the Rams defeated Sea, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
Second-seeded Fordham Prep will attempt to win its second consecutive title and third in the last four years. The Rams will take on rival Iona Prep, which upset top-seeded Monsignor Farrell, 3.5-1.5, in the other semifinal Wednesday at LaTourrete.
“This is special for the seniors who have been to the championship every year they’ve been at Fordham Prep,” coach Kevin Gilligan said. “Regardless of what happens in the final, it’s been a tremendous season. I’m proud of them and they’re proud of themselves. It’s been very successful.”
Jon Renza defeated Rob Andersen, who had the lowest scoring average in the CHSAA, 2-and-1, Hough beat Michael Olgiati, 4-and-3, in second flight, Morrissey ousted Vic Stanzione, 5-and-4 in third fight, Paul Toohey bested Nick Bavaro, 3-and-1, in fourth flight and Brian Cioffi defeated Steve Gennario, 4-and-3, in fifth flight.
Iona Prep 3.5, Monsignor Farrell 1.5: For a second straight year, Iona Prep advances to the championship match to meet rival Fordham Prep after upsetting previously undefeated Monsignor Farrell in the semifinals at LaTourrete Wednesday.
Jams Buttermark won his first flight match, beating Shane Malloy 1-up and Brandon Paone halved his match fourth flight match with Joe Patalano, but Iona won the other three matches with Rich Korzelius beating Ryan Feeney, 3-and-2 in second flight, Ryan Hudson topped Jonathan Lepre, 2-up in third flight and John Martinelli defeated Frank Loffreno, 1-up in fifth flight for the Gaels, who split a pair of regular-season matches with Fordham Prep.
CHSAA state championship field set: The top 20 CHSAA golfers will compete for the state title May 29 at James Baird State Park in Pleasant Valley, N.Y. Fordham Prep is well represented, with its top five all invited. Andersen and Olgiati from Sea, Farrell’s Buttermark, Feeney and Paone will join Xaverian’s Mike Walsh and Mark Fappiano and Pat Collins from Archbishop Molloy in the field.
